Most student and faculty ID cards - now used as keycards - have photos on them, which eliminates the anonymity typically found with a hotel key. Therefore, a lost keycard can be associated with someone’s personal space, and access could be granted into an individual’s residence hall room or office.

This means that a lost or stolen card is not a security threat, since access is refused without the corresponding PIN code.
